Economics of Health Behaviors*

This course is intended for PhD students and other researchers interested in understanding and studying the economic causes and consequences of health behaviors such as obesity, substance
misuse, and tobacco use. It will cover traditional models of health behaviors and consider new insights from behavioral economics. Moreover, time will be allocated to examine modern econometric methods utilized to study health behaviors.


  • Offer students an understanding of health behavior models.
  • Provide an overview of modern economic research on health behaviors, with an emphasis on estimating causal relationships.
  • Motivate students to study the economic causes and consequences of health behaviors.
